WordPress is a great website building tool and I think that it will work very well with what you want to do. It may take some time to adjust it, but by the end it should be able to display your website the way you are picturing it.
If you want to have the Table of Contents on the right menu, the easiest way would be to create categories for your stories and put them in chronological order. You can re-arrange the categories by using the My Category Order plugin, I tested it and it works in the most recent version of WordPress. This would work well if you want to have it by year or month on the right menu, and then have the posts within the year in the proper order for the story.
There are also plugins that will literally create a Table of Contents for you, however these are a little bit more complicated to use. I tested out in the latest version of WordPress the plugin called Table of Contents Creator. What it does is put the pages at the top of the page, and on each page displays a Table of Contents like a real book. There are other plugins that work as well, that is just the one that I tested out.
The plugins available for WordPress really do make it easier to create any type of site you want with WordPress. If you haven't used plugins before, please see:
