In this article, we'll discuss the differences between addon, parked, and subdomains.

If you've recently registered a new domain or pointed a domain registered elsewhere, you'll need to add the domain to your cPanel as either an addon domain or a parked domain in order to host the site here. Registering a complete separate domain name isn't required to create a separate area within your site, a subdomain may work for you in some cases.

I need to use a new domain on my account, how do I setup the domain?

The answer to this question depends on how you want to use the domain.

  • Will your domain have it's own website (separate and different from your main domain)? If so, it should be an addon domain.
  • Do you instead want your new domain to show (point to) the same website as your main domain (for example you purchased the .org or .net in addition to the .com you already have)? In that case, it should be a parked domain
  • Do you simply want to setup a separate area of your website for a blog, store, etc. (e.g. blog.yourdomain.com, store.yourdomain.com, etc.)? If so, you can easily create a subdomain of your site with no need to register a new domain name.

What is an Addon Domain?

An addon domain name allows you to host a website for a domain name that is a completely different website from your main domain name. For example, if mypetstore.com is your primary domain, you could purchase a brand new domain such as mybookstore.com to host as well; even though the two domains are not connected.  This second domain (with it's own separate content) would be created as an Addon Domain in your cPanel.  At Web Hosting Hub there is no limit to the number of addon domains you can add to your account. For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, please read this article how to create an Addon domain.

What is a Parked Domain?

A parked domain name allows you to add a domain to your account that will be pointed to the same content as your main domain. For example, if we had webhostinghub.com as our Primary Domain, we could add webhostinghub.net and webhostinghub.org as Parked Domains which would lead any visitors to the content located on webhostinghub.com. This is also useful if you have a long main domain name but want to use a shortened version of that domain name for email addresses so your customers don't have to try and remember a long email address. Please read this article for more information on how to add a parked domain.  There is no limit to the number of parked domains you can add to your account here at Web Hosting Hub.

What is a Subdomain?

A subdomain is like a "Domain within a Domain." You may use a subdomain if you want to create a new section of your website that is separate from the rest of the website, such as a blog. For example, a subdomain name of webhostinghub.com could be store.webhostinghub.com or support.webhostinghub.com.  Please read this article for more information on how to create a subdomain.
