You can add a meta description to your website by adding the following code in the <head> tag of your website:

<meta name="description" content="This is the description of my website" />

When you use the code just replace the content attribute with your own description.  Generally the meta tags are put at the top of the head tag, right under the <head> tag, but it is not required as long as the meta description is put in the <head> section of your website.  The mega tag works with other HTML coding, so you do not have to remove anything from the head tag.  If your page already has coding between the <head> and </head> tags just add the meta tag along with the other coding on its own line.

While there is not an official limit to how long a description is, most search engines will not display more then 150 characters so if possible keep your description under that mark.  The meta description should be a concise and accurate description of your website as it will display in search results for potential visitors to see.  The description should also use the primary keywords for your website, so for example if your site is about growing flowers, make sure that the word "flowers" and "grow" are prominently displayed in the description.  Please see our next article for information on adding meta keywords to your website.
