By default, when you send or receive email the messages are not encrypted. This means that if the email was intercepted by a hacker, then they would have easy access to the contents of the email as it is not encrypted. Most of the time this is not an issue, but if you are emailing personal or private information, it's a good idea to encrypt your email by connecting to our servers over an SSL encrypted connection.
In addition to security, many users move to using email over SSL due to port use restrictions by their ISP that prevents them from sending email. For example, many Internet Service Providers block port 25, which prevents their users from sending email over this default port. Sending email over an SSL encrypted connection requires that you go over another port other than 25, thus resolving the issue caused by ISP's blocking port 25.
