By default, when you send or receive email the messages are not encrypted. This means that if the email was intercepted by a hacker, then they would have easy access to the contents of the email as it is not encrypted. Sending email over an SSL encrypted connection requires that you go over another port other than 25, thus resolving the issue caused by ISP's blocking port 25.
