When dealing with large volumes of email using the IMAP mail protocol, it's important to prevent excessive IMAP activity to ensure your mail activity isn't causing adverse effects on the server for other users.
One of the ways to help stop your IMAP activity from causing excessive usage is by limiting the amount of messages you're keeping at once in your main Inbox folder. You can keep lots of mail on the server, but when it's all stored in the main Inbox folder, all of the message headers need to be synced to your mail client each time it checks for new messages, and this can lead to a lot of resource usage.
Our system administration team can setup an auto archive script for your problematic IMAP accounts for you, as one solution to these type of resource usage problems. This script would run once a week and automatically take any messages older than 30 days and archive them into a dated IMAP folder.
You would then be able to login with any webmail client to view your archived mail, or you could subscibe to those archive IMAP folders in your favorite desktop mail client.
