In the previous tutorial we showed you how to configure your homepage in WordPress. As we continue our Getting Started in Wordpress series, this guide will show you how to install WordPress as an Addon domain. Whether you use WordPress on your primary domain or not, you can also install WordPress on an Addon Domain in your cPanel account. If you need any assistance setting up an Addon Domain on your cPanel account, please refer to our article on Adding an Addon Domain.

The basic steps are all the same as installing WordPress on your primary domain, but we will go over them again just to make sure nothing is missed.

  1. First, log into your cPanel.

  2. Once you have logged into your cPanel, click on WordPress under Top Applications.

  3. This will bring you directly to the WordPress section in Softaculous. You will see a description of the program as well as some additional information, click on the Install Now button to proceed.

  4. An installation form will appear. Fill out the details, then click Install at the bottom of the form.

  5. Software Setup
    Field Details
Choose Protocol If you have installed an SSL Certificate, select https:// from the drop-down menu. Otherwise, select http://.
    Choose Domain
In Directory This field is available to install WordPress to a particular directory. This is not necessary unless you are installing WordPress on a subdomain, leave this field blank.
    Site Settings
    Field Details
Site Name Enter the name of your Wordpress site (not a URL). WordPress will allow you to change this later as well.
Site Description Enter a brief description of your website. WordPress will allow you to change this later as well.
Enable Multisite (WPMU) Leave this checkbox option to setup multi-site unchecked unless you are familiar with using Wordpress Multisite.
    Admin Account
    Field Details
Admin Username Enter the username you would like to assign administrator privileges to. You will use this username to log into the WordPress Dashboard.
Admin Password Enter the password you would like to use for the administrator credentials. You will use this password to log into the WordPress Dashboard.
Admin Email Enter an email address for the administrator account to use. If you need to reset your administrator password, this email address will be used.
    Choose Language
    Field Details
Select Language Select the preferred language to be used in this Wordpress installation from the drop-down menu. English is selected by default.

The process to install WordPress will complete after you have selected the final Install button at the bottom of the screen. The default login URL will be exampleaddondomain.com/wp-admin, as any additional installations of WordPress will have their own separate login URL and admin Dashboard. Remember that you specified the Administrator user name and password, you can use those credentials to log into WordPress. Or simply click on the icon under the admin column. Softaculous should automatically redirect and log you into the new Dashboard.

In the next tutorial, we will show you how to install Wordpress on your Temporary URL.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the question. The main reason is to allow you to setup a second website using a different domain name instead of the primary domain name. The primary domain name is the domain used to setup your Web Hosting Hub account. An add-on domain is typically another domain name that you have either registered with Web Hosting Hub or another domain registrar. In other words, an add-on domain is a separate website.

I hope that clarifies the issue, please let us know if you have any further questions or comments.

Arnel C.

When trying to download WP to an add on domain I am given the choice of the drop downs:

'newdomain'  or

'newdomain.primarydomain'

Which one should I use?  Will it make a difference to be found on Google?  I want the new domain to be totally separate from my primary and not lined in any way publicly.

Thanks

Hello Lisa,

Thank you for your question. This option is really up to you, but what you choose from the drop-down, is where you will access your site.

It should not make a difference to Google, but only they can say. Here is a helpful link to their official Webmaster Guidelines page.

As long as you are installing Wordpress in its own location (different folder from your other websites), it will be separate from your other website. This guide helps to explain the folder structure.

If you have any further questions, feel free to post them below.
Thank you,

I'm hoping you have insight into this.  I've succesfully installed a Wordpress site in a subdirectory (so as to not disturb the existing website which serves another purpose).  I've pointed my Add-on domain to the correct folder; however, it only works on the home page.  If I you click on any other pages I've made it shows the root domain in the url which I want to remain hidden.  If I change the permalinks in Wordpress so that the Site Address (URL) reflects the new domain name, none of my pages open any longer - returning an error message. Do I need to change the code in the .htaccess file?

Hello Melissa,

I'm sorry to hear about the problem you're having with WordPress. You might to simply start over to make things easier, or, if you want, give us your domain name so that we can review the account and see what you've done.

The easiest way to go about this issue is to install it in this order:

  1. First, add an add-on domain. You shouldn't have to POINT this domain. If necessary, remove your current one and try it again using the instructions above.

  2. Once the add-on domain is properly added, you can run the install for WordPress again. When you run the install, you should be using the domain name that you specified for your add-on domain in the directory path. A typical path would be "public_html/add-on-domain-name". The domain name would be the URL that you just added (NOT including the path). The "in directory" is the actual path of the file (e.g. public_html/target).

  3. Once you have completed your WordPress installation, then you should be able to pull up the site with no issues. There should be an individual .htaccess file per each installation.

Hope that helps to clear this issue up for you! If you require further assistance, please provide us information on your installation and we would be happy to help.

Arnel C.

Great thanks Arnel! I'm going to try your list of suggestions.  I just reviewed this site which was recommended by someone at wordpress.org but nothing helped..I even did a database 'find and replace' using downloaded software but still nothing.  I may have to reinstall everything as you stated..

Thanks again!

Your post inspired me to reinvestigate into Duplicator which I used a couple of years ago.  So first off, I removed the Addon domain, then reinstalled it as per the instructions you showed me.  After this I ran the install.php file that the Duplicator plugin created of my site when I packaged it, running it under the new url - ie. www.newurl.com/install.php.  It found every instance of the old url which included the root info and replaced it with the new one, fixing the entire site and making it so that I don't have to redo a thing.  What a massive relief!  Thanks again for your help!

I've don't all this, installing Wordpress and the whole bit, but when I try to actually go to my admin or even my front end site all I get is "this webpage is not available." Any idea why?

Hello Chris,

Thank you for contacting us. We are happy to help you troubleshoot, but will need some additional information.

Have you added the domain to your cPanel yet?

Is the domain pointed to WebHosting Hub.

What is the domain name, so we can test?

Thank you,

my domain name is example.comI tried to point it to webhosting hub. I confirmed that it was the right name by looking at what my working website is pointed to, so its not that. Yes, I added it as an ad-on domain and installed wordpress. I was then prompted to go to my admin section on my domain, but all i got was "page not found"

Hello Chris,

Thank you for contacting us. I checked your domain, and there did seem to be a problem with the domain resolving. I was able to correct it by registering it manually with our Registrar.

Your site is resolving for me at this time, but it may take up to 24 hours to propagate globally.

If you have any additional issues with your domain, i recommend contacting Live Support.

Thank you,

Thanks for your question about the Domain information page. This happens when your domain's name servers are NOT pointed to the hosting service that you're trying to use. Currently, the domain is pointed to GoDaddy. If you're using Web Hosting Hub, then they needed to be pointed to our servers. Check out this article on changing your nameservers to Web Hostng Hub.
