Introduction -- What is MediaWiki?

MediaWiki allows you to create your own Wikipedia-like website. You can make a Wiki for a particular topic or one to cover all kinds of random topics.

In this tutorial I'm going to show you to install MediaWiki with Softaculous.

Installation Methods

You can install MediaWiki on your primary domain, an addon domain, or a subdomain, (wiki.domain.com). Likewise, you can also install MediaWiki into a subdirectory (domain.com/wiki).

Softaculous lets you install MediaWiki automatically with one of the above methods. However, if you're going to install MediaWiki into an a addon domain or subdomain then you should create the addon of subdomain first, and then follow the steps below.

Steps to Install MediaWiki with Softaculous

  1. Log in to your cPanel
  2. Under Software and Services choose Softaculous
  3. Under Wikis choose MediaWiki
  4. Click Install
  5. Choose the domain and Directory you want to install MediaWiki into
  6. Fill out the form and click Install.

Once you have finished the installation you can visit the link to your Wiki; and once there you should see MediaWiki has been successfully installed.

Site Configuration

Make sure to give your Wiki a unique name that reflects the purpose of your main content. This is important because it will help visitors quickly learn the purpose of your site.

Also, it is wise to set up your Wiki email, which you can use to receive notifications.

You can leave the Database Settings as they are.

Important: Make a note of your Admin Username and Admin Password. You will use those to log in after the installation.
