I am 100% new to this - trying to build a personal website. I am looking for a step-by-step guide for the not brilliant. The wordpress templates look fantastic - however I have zero idea how to get to that point. One can not even get a main picture background. I have been looking through the wordpress tutorials - and they do not seem very straight forward at all. If this is the easy way to get a personal website/blog set up - I'd hate to see the complex ones. Is there a step-by-step guide on how to set up a webpage? Like getting pictures on it (personalized vs some stock crappy photo) videos, and sub categories of content?

Hello,

Thanks for the question. I can understand your confusion, but unfortunately, the problem you're talking about is pretty broad - everyone has a different idea of what they should do first in building a website, especially the uninitiated.

WordPress is the most widely used software for building a website, so give it a chance. Since you didn't mention that you were using any other software, let's stick with this one and I'll list some basics based on what you're asking.

1) If you have Wordpress installed, then please login to the WordPress Admin. Otherwise, you can learn about installing WordPress with our tutorials.

2)After you're logged in, since you asked about setting a background image, you need to click on APPEARANCE in the Admin menu. Building a website in WordPress isn't like constructing a website from scratch. There is already a framework in place and running. You will need to modify the pieces of the framework to meet your needs. You may need to choose a different theme in order to meet your specific appearance needs. Since there are literally thousands of themes out there, chances are that you'll find one to your liking.

3). In Appearance, click on Background. You will need upload a graphic for the background. This is not provided for you unless you're using a theme that has a background already loaded. Again, it's important to remember that BACKGROUND will not necessarily just be placing a graphic across the screen. This placement depends on how the theme is formatted. The current version does NOT allow a graphic to be displayed across the screen.

4) Once you upload a file, you can choose to use static page or even just file as it is. Preview the page you can see how it will look.

You will need to decide on how you want the site to look, but the formatting is done by removing elements or using a specific template for a specific look. A series of videos might help you understand Wordpress better. You can find these videos at WordPress TV. You should find instructions there that help you get a better hold using the software.

As for other options, you're welcome to try using any of the programs provided by Softaculous. I hope this helps! If you're wanting to approach the process of building a site from code, try searching for "building a website from scratch" and you'll find many different tutorials that may meet your needs. You're also welcome to try using our own beginner tutorial using the Builder program as yet another option.

Kindest Regards,
Arnel C.
