Menu Selection position JoomlaOnce you learn how to create a Menu on your Joomla site, you will want to position the Menu in a certain location. This article will cover the basic locations you can use to place your Menu on your site. The main positions are:

  • Navigation (position-1)
  • Top Center (position-3)
  • Right (position-7)
  • Left (position-8)
  • Footer (footer)

Below is a brief description of what the location is and what it looks like on the site.

Basic positions in Joomla 3.1

Navigation (position-1)

Navagation position JoomlaThe Navigation position is at the very top of the site. The Menu title will be hidden in this position and will need to be styled with CSS to look appropriate. The Navigation (position-1) is what you would select for your main Navigation and has a module created for it by default.

Top Center (position-3)

Top Center position JoomlaThe Top Center position is much like the Navigation position except it is lower and the Menu Title will display on top if the Menu. This location will also need CSS styling to have it appear appropriately. See the image to the right for the Top Center position in Joomla.

Right (position-7)

Right position JoomlaThe Right position is the position the Default Main Menu is located. You can add other Menus here, create a custom menu, or remove the main from it. The snapshot to the right shows a custom menu added to the Right position.

Left (position-8)

Left position JoomlaThe Left position is not used by default. The Left position can be used if you want to make a sidebar on the left. See image to the right. The Left position is use if your want to remove the right sidebar and create a left sidebar, or if you want a 3 column layout for your site with a right and left side bar with content in the middle.

Footer (footer)

Footer position JoomlaThe Footer position is for adding a menu to the footer of your site. The image to the right shows the Menu in the Footer. This will require CSS styling to make the menu look appropriate as well.

Now that you can create the menu and position the Menu where you want on the page, let's style a Menu so that it looks appropriate for your website.
