I have a website that is up and running on another host (account paid through next March)
Now I need to build a new site to replace it.
What's the best way to handle this?
Can I work on the new site here, and leave the old site running as is until the new site is ready, then make any changes to the domain pointing/transfer?
Would it be better to transfer the old site now?
Can I work on a new WP site without it being 'live'? That is, can I create the new site but not publish until it's ready?
Thanks for your help!

Hello,

Thank you for your question about creating a replacement site. In my opinion, the best way to do this is to use a hosts file modification. With this method, your domain can remain pointed to your old host on the web, but in your personal computer you can use the domain to point to your new server. That way, you can develop the new site privately.

Then, when you are ready, you can undo the hosts file modification, point your domain to the new server, and in a few hours, all traffic will be re-routed to the new server. This means you have no down time.

Best,
Christopher M.
