One of the most common applications that people use are the Microsoft Office applications that include Excel and Word. Happily, if you don't have these applications, you can still obtain a free account in Outlook.com. Then through Microsoft's One Drive, you can obtain documents from others using Microsoft Office and then obtain a link that you can use to share the document or embed in a website. For this tutorial we will be embedding a Word document into a WordPress post. No plugins needed!

You will need a OneDrive or Outlook.com account in order to use this tutorial. You'll also need to have a file - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. - that you can share and embed into your WordPress post. The first steps will be to obtain the embed code.

  1. Login to your Microsoft account. In creating this tutorial, we are using a Microsoft Outlook.com account.
  2. Microsoft Application menu

Click on the OneDrive icon that leads to the application types

  3. Click on the application you wish to use. Create or load the document that you want to share. If you have a document that was created on the stand-alone Office application, you may need to upload it into OneDrive before you can open it in the online application of your choice
  4. Click on File to see Share option

Once you have the document open, you will see a menu across the top. Click on File to open. Next, click on Share

  5. Share or Embed options

Here you will have the option to Share with People or Embed. Since we are embedding the document into the WordPress post, click on Embed.

  6. The Generate Code screen

Next you will get a screen that has a Generate button at right. This page basically warns you that people will be able to view your document without having to sign in. Click on Generate to see the HTML code that is used to embed the document. If you want to cancel, then click on Done in the bottom right-hand side of the screen.

  7. Generated code screen

After you click on the Generate button you will see the generated HTML code and a preview of the document. You have several options here:

PreviewYou can see a preview of what your viewers will see when you embed the document
DimensionsYou can resize the preview image by changing these dimensions numbers
InteractionUnderneath dimensions there is a drop-arrow. If you click on this menu, you will see the options to allow your viewers to print the document, view the embed code, or see a particular page of your document
Embed CodeThis is the generated HTML code that you can use to embed the document into your web page

Once you are satisfied with the dimensions and options for the embedded document, click in the box with the embed code. It will automatically select all of the code. Copy it with your mouse or keyboard commands. Right-click with the mouse and select copy in the pop-up menu, or control + c on the keyboard (command+ c on a Mac) if you're not familiar with the copy options

Adding the Embed Code into your WordPress Post

When you have completed selecting and copying the the Share link, then you will need to go to your WordPress account.

  1. Login to the WordPress Administrator
  2. Select Posts or Pages

Click on Posts or Pages, then open a new post/page or edit an existing one.

  3. Paste the embed code in the TEXT tab

In the editor, make sure that you are on the Text tab, then paste in the embed code that you copied from Microsoft.

  4. preview of the embedded document

Save the Page/Post. Click on Preview in order to see the results of your embed.

That completes the process for embedding a Microsoft OneDrive document into your WordPress Post or Page. Note that you can use the HTML embed code on other pages where HTML is able to be parsed.
