Hi, all. I updated to the latest version of Wordpress on my two blogs this morning and since then I've been getting a 500 Internal Server Error specifically on blog post pages that have comments. (An odd distinction, but it's the only one I can find.) However, there was nothing in my error log.

After looking through answers to some related questions on here I tried renaming the .htaccess file in my /public_html folder, which caused the 500 error to become a 404. At that point my log showed a few errors (I assume generated by the 404), which went away after a few minutes. When I regenerated a new .htaccess file the 500 error came back. Permissions on that file are set at 644 and I've also tried changing them around, to no avail.

So, I'm back to a 500 error on post pages with comments, and an empty error log. Any guidance would certainly be appreciated!

Hello Casee-marie,

Sorry to hear about the problem with the WordPress post. I look at your posts and then specifically at the links that are leading to the error. When I click on those links, I'm getting the error. It's probably related to one of your plugins. You may want to disable your plugins one at a time and see when the link starts working again. Start with any caching program you're running. The latest update to Wordpress 4.0 may be affecting the plugins that you're running.

Arnel C.

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately I deactivated all plugins one at a time and I haven't seen a change.

Hello Casee,

You have multiple WordPress sites running on your account. Can you be specific as to where you disabled the plugins? The problem is occurring on the site where the link originates (not on your main site). Also, make sure clear any cached files. You may need to reset permalinks for your sites as well. Permalinks are reset by changing them to default (make sure to copy any custom format first), saving them as default, then re-saving the custom permalink.

Please let us know if you have made these changes and you still see the same problem.

Regards,
Arnel C.

Whoops, sorry. I was working on the main site, which also has the 500 error, but I disabled plugins on the other site (literaryinklings.com) as well and I haven't seen a change. I also reset the permalinks on the literaryinklings.com site and the 500 error persists.

I had a hunch that the 500 error may be a theme problem, and I think I was right. When I switch to a more current theme the links load without a problem. I'm using an older version of Thesis, and maybe it's just not compatible with Wordpress 4.0. I'll try updating Thesis or otherwise switching themes. Thanks again for your responses!
