If your domain is registered with us and you want it removed, it is possible to have your domain registration cancelled. The process of having a domain subscription removed and cancelled from a domain registrar are two different things. The following article explains this in detail below. If you intend to keep a domain but manage it with a different domain registrar, then this is known as a domain transfer and will require an authorization code. The release of a domain requires a verified email request. Verification through email is accomplished by providing either the last 4 digits of the credit card on your account, or the Account Management Panel (AMP) password in the email that you send to the Technical Support team.
How do I cancel my domain registration?
Before you begin the process of cancel domain registration, please review the different ways a domain "cancellation" can occur. This will depend upon how you wish for it to be done. Here's a brief list:
- Immediate cancellation of domain subscription for purposes of a domain transfer - requires that you send a verified emailed request to
in order to have the domain released from our management. This does not delete the domain's registration from the registrar. The authorization code for a transfer does not come from Web Hosting Hub. The authorization code will come from the domain registrar, Melbourne IT.
- Set domain to expire and release at expiration - this means that after the expiration date, then you would not be re-billed for the next cycle. If you intend to transfer the domain after the expiration, then you would need to send a verfied email request to
in order to have the domain released at least 2 weeks prior to the date of expiration. Note that you should have the domain released 2 weeks PRIOR to the domain expiration to avoid problems with the transfer since some domain transfers may typically require 7-10 days.
- Set domain to expire and then delete domain registration after expiration - You will need to send a verified email request to
to have the domain deleted after the domain subscription expires. Note that deleted domains are no longer accessible over the web.
- Cancellation of domain subscription and deletion of the domain from the web - In some cases, there may be a need to have a domain name deleted so that it cannot be accessed from the web. This can only be done with a verified emailed request to
. Note that once the domain is deleted from the domain registrar, it cannot be reversed. Domains that are deleted would have to be re-registered, but the domain's immediate availability may depend upon the domain registrar.
If you are trying to cancel a domain and register another one due to a problem in the domain spelling or wording, then you should make the change within 5 days of the original domain registration. Domains that are registered beyond 5 days would consume the free domain registration credit that is available with some hosting accounts.
It is possible to have the domain subscription cancelled and then not act on the actual transfer process. If you do not follow up on a released domain, then the domain registrar will attempt to bill you for the renewal of the domain when the domain expires. At that point the billing for the domain registration is directly between you and the domain registrar. If you did not pay the renewal, then the domain registration would be suspended and then placed in redemption after a period of non-payment. The "redemption" period is a period of time where there would be a penalty fee added to the cost of having the domain renewed. This cost typically varies depending on the domain registrar.
Cancellation of a domain registration subscription will not automatically remove the website URL from the internet. This will remove the auto-renew of your domain and the billing item from your account with us.
