If your domain is registered at a different registrar you can transfer your domain to Web Hosting Hub. Please keep in mind that transferring the management of your domain does not affect your website as it does not automatically change your domain's Nameservers. More information regarding the difference between these two processes can be found in our article Domain Transfer vs. Nameserver Change.

While this article will take you through the steps of transferring your domain name to our management, the subject of transferring your actual site files is covered in our Website Getting Started Guide for New Customers.

Important Information to Understand Before Transferring Your Domain

To transfer your domain name, there are a few important things to know first:

  • Currently we can only transfer domains that end in .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us.If your domain is any other top level domain, you can still host it here by pointing your domain to our Nameservers.

  • Registrar transfers CANNOT be done in these instances:
    a) Within sixty (60) days of initial registration or
    b) Within fourteen (14) days of expiration.

  • If your domain is not already pointed to our Nameservers, please either point your domain before initiating the domain transfer or after the transfer has completed.

  • The domain name must be unlocked.

  • Make sure your domain does not have privacy on.

  • Make sure you have access to the Administrative email address listed in the WHOIS.

How do I transfer my domain name?

Once you have unlocked your domain and obtained the authorization code, you can begin the transfer.  You can transfer your domain name in your Account Management Panel (or AMP).  For help logging into AMP, please read our article on accessing your Account Management Panel.

  1. Login to AMP
  2. In the top menu, hover over Domains and click Domain Transfers.
  3. Next type in the domain that you want to transfer and click Submit
  4. The next screen will tell you if your domain is locked or not.  The domain transfer will not initiate if the domain shows as locked.  Make sure that you have access to the admin email and select "Yes" from the menu.  Enter the Authorization Code for the domain and click Save
  5. The next screen is the Billing Information screen. Your first domain transfer OR registration is included FREE for the first year with your hosting account. Additional domain transfers cost $14.99.  Confirm the account information is correct and click Submit

The transfer process has now begun.  Remember that domain transfers can take up to 10 days.  You will be notified via email when the domain transfer process completes.

I originally bought my domain name from Register.com on 5/7/13. Does that mean I cannot transfer it to Web Hub for 60 days? Is that why I am unable to log into WordPress even though it is shows it was downloaded. When I enrolled for hosting I used the domain name I created with Register and it was accepted without any difficulties. Do I need to transfer domain names or is there a reason I cannot access WordPress or my homepage. Every time I try to access WordPress I get the message that my URL is coming soon to Register.com.

Thank you for your question. Any domain cannot be transferred within 60 days, but you can still host your site with us by simply pointing to our nameservers.

Then, within 24 hours of propagation your website will be hosted with us.

We are currently testing on Hub and planned to move over soon, but our current hosting company has gone dark with only smattering of comments (mostly excuses) about why. Our website has been down for 6 days now!

Now for the dumb question: Do we have to transfer our domain or can we just point to the Web Hub's nameservers? I'm a little confused about what we should do to get our website back online as quickly as possible. Which option gets us away from the current host's servers and keeps our domain name?

The current (MIA) hosting company is PowerSurge/Nine Dot Systems. Apparently the culprit behind everything is VolumeDrive.

Hi TurquoiseArmadillo, You don't have to transfer a domain name to our registrar in order to host the domain name with us. To host your current website with us, you'll need to upload your files to your Web Hosting Hub account, update your domain's nameservers, and then allow up to 24 hours for propagation.

I transferred my domain name (and registration--so I thought) to Web Hosting Hub in Oct 2012. Now I find that the registration has expired and apparently been re-registered by another party making my domain name point to an unrelated site. I never received notification from Web Hosting Hub that the registration was expiring. Unfortunate situation. I'm waiting for an explanation...

Could you clarify what step you are having trouble with? To transfer your domain, you will simply need to contact your registrar and ask for them to unlock the domain as well as provide the authorization code. After you have that, you may follow the steps within this article to submit your domain transfer. If you're still having trouble with the steps in AMP, I recommend that you submit a ticket with technical support in which they will be happy to complete this part for you.

Randy - Be aware that your domain registration agreement does NOT move with your domain. So if you transfer your domain to Web Hosting hub as the responsible DNS, the renewal of your domain registration wil still be with your original hosting company. So unless you enter into a new registration agreement with Web Hosting Hub, you may not realize it when your domain registration needs to be renewed.

In my case, I did not make an greement for domain registration with WHH, and my domain expired. At which point Web Hosting Hub hijacked the domain mane and registered it as theirs ( or their parent comany). Now they want me to pay $150 or so to "redeem" it. Which is BS and unethical in my view. Yes, I failed to renew it becuase I expected some notification. But WHH didn't notify me becuase I had not registered it through them, although I had transferred my domain to them.

So I was caught in this trap. Fortunately for me, my neither my domain nor my hosting was very important to me, so I got a refund of the hosting fee from my credit card company and could care less about the domain. But I still maintain my side business, and anyonje who tries to access my old site gets this: http://www.restoration-music.com. Some generic site that means nothing to nobody.

So make sure you maintain your domain registration,which is separate from your domain hosting.

Jack: Sorry to hear about the experience you had regarding your domain. I looked into restoration-music.com, and it was never successfully transferred to us. Redemption periods and fees are standard when a domain expires, and is part of ICANN's Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA). It allows a last chance of recovering your domain for a fee, before it is released to the public. The fee is dependent on your registrar; I cannot provide a price quote since it is not in our control.

Terri: Live Tech support can release the management rights to you. Then you can recover the Authorization code from the registrar directly. View our step-by-step guide here. Sorry to hear about the issues you're having. Unfortunately, I do not see an active domain transfer for the domain you've mentioned (which I've removed from this public article).

It would also seem, that Startlogic last updated the domain whois information on 8/4/2010, and it seems like since that point the domain has fallen completely out of registration.

If you wanted to use the domain name again at this point, you could simply register a new domain from our AMP interface by logging into your account.

Under the Manage My Account section, simply click Register Domain with a + symbol on the icon. Then simply complete the rest of the registration process.

Hello Krisann,

Domain transfers generally are only done with active domains. The ICANN rules are set up to apply to domains while they are not expired. Most likely you will need to re-register the domain name before it can be transferred form GoDaddy. Contact them to be sure, however.

I just renewed my domain name with PairNIC for the next four years.  My web hosting company has been Dot5 Hosting and I've discovered I've been paying as awful lot of money to them over the years so I'd like to switch over to Web Hosting Hub.  I've noted on your website that the first year of domain transfer is free.  Does this mean I will have to pay you as well as PairNIC for the next three years for my domain name?  Sorry, I am a complete novice.  For years I've been paying Dot5 for a website that is not friendly to blogging even though I was using WordPress.  I'm hoping your site will be a little more user friendly.

Sorry to hear your hosting hasn't been user friendly up to this point. We have a WordPress starting guide that goes over some of the things you can do with WordPress that might be of interest to you. You can also always browse or ask questions to the community for further help if you get stuck.

In regards to your extended domain registration, it depends on the current Registrar. Typically your domain name is actually registered for the longer period such as 4 years, which you can double check by running a Network-Tools.com whois on the domain you've registered by typing it in the box right above the Go button. Towards the bottom of the whois results, you should see the Expiration Date: listed.

If you domain indeed expires 4-5 years from now, if you transferred your domain name to WebHostingHub as your free domain transfer, your billing renewal date would be matched to the expiration date of your domain. You would receive a billing notice from us typically at least 2 weeks prior to the domain expiration date letting you know that if you would like to renew the domain you need to pay for at least another year.

If your current Registrar doesn't actually have the domain name registered for another 4-5 years, I would check with them on their policy for domain transfer outs. They might not offer a refund if you've paid for the 4-5 years up front, and I'm not sure if transferring to another Registrar like us would end up costing you those up front registration fees.

I just hit the submit button to submit an order for a domain transfer from the current registrar to webhostinghub and thwas taken back to the AMP login screen.  When I checked to see if the domain is availabe for transfer I received the message:  this domain has already been saved for transfer.  How do I check the status of the transfer process?

Thanks for the question. The actual transfer process for domain to pass from one domain registrar to another can take up to 7-10 days. However, it's usually a little quicker than that. The process is not instantaneous, however. Your AMP interface should show any changes in the status of the transfer order. If necessary, you can also contact the live support team, and they can run a report with the domain registrar to see where the domain transfer stands. You will not likely see a change in the the status today.

I hope that helps to clear up the issue. Please give the process time to complete. You will receive an email to confirm the change from the domain registrar.
